I wasn’t convinced I’d like this film as the topic wasn’t one I knew a lot about, 3 hours is a long time to be watching a film and Christopher Nolan films can be a bit marmite. But….I loved Cillian in Peaky Blinders and in 28 days later, so was willing to give it a go.
I thought this film was superb - it didn’t feel like a three hour movie at all because the story, acting and cinematography is terrific. Cillian Murphy is perfection as Oppenheimer - there is always a sincerity to his performances that makes you believe utterly that he is the person he portrays. Robert Downey junior really surprised me in his role (which I won’t expand on), giving an amazing portrayal of Lewis Strauss, particularly towards the end of the film. Emily Blunt was also terrific in what could have been a relatively minor role in lesser hands.
The story is fascinating and absorbing - we know that the bomb is built and the devastating effect it has when used, but how many of us knew about how it came to be built and tested? The process employed to bring about Oppenheimer’s downfall is exposed as a vindictive witchhunt and no one survives a witchhunt unscathed. You realise how/why Macarthyism was allowed to run unhindered for so long.
A great film about a topic we should all know more about and have an opinion of - go see!
