"CODA" does not pretend to have a wholly unique plot; there are echoes of "Running on Empty" (1988) (a musically gifted teen has to leave his tight-knit family); "Mr. Holland's Opus" (1995) (a music teacher -- with a deaf son, no less -- is smitten with the remarkable talent of one of his students, who -- yes -- has to leave her family to pursue her dreams); and "Sing Street" (2016) (a teen -- with major encouragement from his older brother -- sings from the heart, and "takes off to find the sky," as Harry Chapin once sang). Still, "CODA" is heartwarming, moving, and the audition scene will have you cheering -- and bawling. There is also real chemistry between the two high school music students trying to pursue their dreams (Emilia Jones and "Sing Street" star Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). All in all, "CODA" is a masterpiece.
