Typical Steve McQueen character; independent, sharp mind, deeply layered vision, courage, & belief in self. Hard to make a movie with emphasis on military discipline & duty when the central character is something of a renegade committed to unseen & seldom understood ethical standards.
Production & imagery very good, well written scenes that were often stories within a story. The performance of Richard Crenna is powerful but understated. He too was a character that also held himself to a unique set of "higher standards". A Commander committed to maintaining order in situations difficult to anticipate or understand. Why I think his character was meant to keep the main plot together.
The imagery & dialog of most dramatic scenes sre good subplots, but often seem inconsequential to the main plot, but provide plenty to entertain, as they are individually enjoyable.
A little long, some dead spaces, but decent entertainment for Steve McQueen fans. And Candice Bergen's performance? Well, it takes two to tango, so no heavy lifting in the acting department needed when you have someone that darn pretty!!!
