Optically FIFA and EA do a great job with an immersive experience. Player faces in game, proper biometrics in animation, and stadium feel make the game look great to play. However, optics and immersion are a small aspect to a video game for me personally. Especially a sports game. The gameplay is truly disappointing to play as an experienced casual player. There has not been any major enhancements in gameplay feel for multiple fifa generations that is noticeable in a positive aspect. Tactics remain the same and very watered down. Defensive AI needs a massive rework. In every single defensive style besides for constant pressure, defenders will not pressure an opponent in the box. Calling a defender is more of a visual deterent than an actually defensive strategy. The player will not make a challenge unless it is dribbled into. The multiple player call feature is better but still is very ineffective for the above reasons. Offensive ai is a little better. Runs can be hit and miss, with the same tactics and players sometimes they are very active in runs made . Other times they will stay put on a defender or will run and stay behind a defender. Loose balls, especially with ai opponents, are a total nightmare. It doesn't even translate user input properly. Friendly Ai players frequently get in the way of passes, tackles, clearances, shots, dribbling. Which, needless to say, is very frustrating. The basic passing system still has major issues. Many times I'll pass the ball forward only to have a square pass or vice versa. Has to do a better job with pass weight as well. Unfortunately it is a trend, but fifa 23 seems to be neglecting gameplay in exchange for cosmetic options. Probably won't buy another EA football (soccer) title until these issues have been remedied. Fun concept but very disappointing in the execution.
