There is much to like in The Prom if your expectations are more modest than you are accustomed to. The cast of big names is more often than not appealing, though being forced to wear their emotions on more sleeves than you can count threatens to overshadow the natural appeal of Jo Ellen Pellman. The musical score, whose witty lyrics and mostly forgettable tunes, does help to carry the film, whose important message is especially timely this year. It earns both laughs and tears, which keep it earthbound.
