Whilst obviously a pacy and engaging read, I wouldn’t describe it as a penetrating character study. The most fascinating element of the book, namely Marianne’s perceived need to be “owned” is not dealt with in enough depth. Marianne’s family needed exploring in way more detail if we were to have any real insight into her behaviour. A good holiday read but not particularly challenging.
