An offshoot of the Robotech / Macross series that manages to find it's own charming little niche while following the bench-markers that make it true to the series. Macross Plus is still the pinnacle of the series but Macross II is still fun to watch for what it is.
The animation is gorgeous although the plot can wobble along at some points before changing tone drastically. A good anime film if you like space operas & light drama, but in a series where Culture - more namely music - is the key to defeating evil, they didn't spend nearly as much effort on songwriting and singers as they should have for the musical numbers.
It was originally a OVA Mini Series before being re-released as a "movie". A VERY long movie that is - in fact, a OVA Mini Series stuck together into a single movie - much in the same spirit as another animae classic Armitage the Third's 4 part OVA was turned into the movie PolyMatrix.
