The first third of the book was kind of rough. The main character, Opal, is very unlikeable and I found myself driven to continue reading only because she kept getting herself into worse situation that compelled me to see the dumpster fire she was creating in her life.
At about the 2/3rd mark the story unfolded deeper into its fantasy setting and that's when I started to actually care about what was happening to the main cast (though I still think Opal is a total knob).
And the final chunk of the book really brings it all together. The ending was really good. I didn't expect the finale in the best kind of way.
Not a perfect book, but if you can stand Opal long enough to keep reading, it has a payoff that's worth it.
