I normally love Taylor Swift's work. However, the first indication that something was amiss was when it took me more than a full day to get through the whole album because, by track 15 out of 31, listening to the remainder of the double-album started feeling like a chore. It is precisely because I am a huge fan of Taylor that I gritted my teeth and committed to listening through the entire thing. If it were any other artist, I wouldn't have made it through 3 tracks before giving up.
Perhaps it's just me, but 31 tracks of more or less the same "vibe" seems exhausting, unnecessary and in desperate need of some red-lining and editing.
To be frank, I was bored.
There were no songs where I felt like I wanted to sing along, none where I wanted to go back and listen over and over again (like I did with Midnights, Lover, 1989, Red, etc.), none that really stood out to me as a killer track.
I still think Taylor Swift is one of the most talented songwriters of all time, an amazing businesswoman, and a magnificent performer.
However, I think one can be a genuine Swiftie and still recognize that this album was not one of her best. With how much music she puts out, and the pace at which she releases music, there's bound to be a few misses.
