This show is FANTASTIC!!!! The sets are beautiful, the filmmaking is technically superb, the stunts - while sometimes minimal - are thrilling, and the story is incredibly well written. Most of all, the acting is PHENOMENAL!!!! Every character is so well played and incredibly believable. This show has found itself quickly climbing higher on my list of favourite current TV shows and I can't wait for season two.
The episodes are rife with information without feeling preachy. Each one focuses on the back story of one girl in the group which gives us a unique opportunity to learn quite a bit about each of the characters both through flashbacks as well as by observing them in the present day. I know that flashbacks are overused in media, however, for this show in particular this structure gives us the chance to form opinions about each of the characters which can then be either strengthened or shattered as the series progresses depending on what you pick up about them from the present day. This show expertly depicts characters from all different walks of life.
The show's creators deserve all of the praise possible for not shying away from incredibly difficult topics like child molestation, statutory rape, mental health, teen suicide, trauma, the effects of addiction in families on children, toxic RADICAL feminism, colonization, racism, homophobia, and the complexity of being LGBTQ+ and still maintaining a relationship to God. These topics are handled with incredible levels of tact and realism, while still ensuring that the show can be viewed by it's intended audience with little to no parental intervention.
It should also be noted that this is probably one of the most diverse casts of characters and actors in media today. In the main cast alone five of the eight girls are BIPOC and if you include secondary and tertiary characters that list goes up by at least eleven, bringing the total number of BIPOC characters/cast members in this show up to at least sixteen of the shows upwards of twenty-five. In addition to this, the show also has one of the most compelling, honest, and in my opinion realistic portrayals of the LGBTQ teen experience currently on television.
I would recommend this show to anyone who enjoys either survival shows (Alaskan Bush People, Alone) or to people who are fans of shows like Away or Lost (when it was still good) and books like Lord of the Flies. This show is a must-watch for any young woman who is looking for something that they can relate to while still being incredibly entertained.
