I read the book a long time ago, quite familiar with Nella Larsen's work as well as being able to relate-considering I've been told the lore of members of my own family on my maternal side, whom I've never met-who were in fact, passing. Being of lighter-skin myself, though I thought both actresses were excellent, neither captured or depicted what an African-American passing would look like...someone like Rashida Jones would have been a better choice.
Additionally, though the Director felt she could relate due to her mother's family, it proves she did NOT grow up Black in America because although the film looked nice, it didn't capture the TRUE DANGER involved with passing, nor the true resentment and other feelings that either side would feel. Not to mention, no Black mother would tolerate disrespectful children! That was so unrealistic. I agree with others, the story was too ambiguous, what was that between the two women? Why did it change for the worse for Irene and WHEN?!? And her husband? They did a pisspoor reflection with the changing in time in the film, too much implied--- and the ending was WAY too vague. For shame.
