Animal-Human conflict is a less touched subject in Indian cinema or rather never elegantly presented on the big screen with a multitude as depicted in the movie "Sherni", released on Amazon Prime OTT platform. As the name itself suggest this story is about a man-eating tigress, the story is set up in a remote village located in Madhya Pradesh. Gifted actress Vidya Balan is in the lead role as an upright Forest Officer has decisively carried the role and has done complete justice to the scope of the character.
Many say that movie has missed the thriller element which expectedly includes the tiger attack and later part of the tiger hunt. But, I see the whole focus of the screenplay is beyond the thriller element to showcase Societal, Economic and Political dimensions of Human-Animal conflict. The screenplay is well crafted, with small cinematic threads like linking Vidya Balan's initial reluctance towards cats with the climax where Vidya withdraws her resignation to save the cubs of deceased T12 ( name of a man-eating tigress in the movie). Except for Bansal & Pintu Bhaiya characters, many other roles in the movie are passive and there was ample scope to improve and utilise these characters productively for storytelling.
This movie is surely a must-watch for someone, Who love reading Jim Corbet's work on tigers, Kannada writer Poorna Chandra Tejasvi books on nature and admirer of Sir David Attenborough for the impeccable enunciation in all his documentary movies.
