The plot is a familiar structure; a somewhat maverick man with unique skills and social shortcomings having to balance various enemies while resolving a puzzle. It's set in Shakespeare's era with the main protagonist being William Shakespeare's brother. But that is a cursory point. What has seeped into the writing is an obsession with specious similes and metaphors. Here are some from very early in the book, including three from the same page: - "like a charge of gunpowder in the hands of a child playing with flint and steel" - "like the growl of a wildcat from the menagerie at the Tower" - "a fury of stamping hooves, rearing, twisting necks and flying manes" - "like a hare from a hound." - "like a second mouth" - "like dark rusted iron" If you like this style of writing, you'll like the book.
