I want to start off by saying that I am a huge fan of Wes Anderson’s work as I find his Aesthetic, narratives and use of pastel colour palettes pleasurable to watch so I was excitedly anticipating the release of this film.
Although I did enjoy it, I was put off by the disjointed storyline between the narrator and playwright, this was one of my least favourite parts as I found it hard to follow. I felt like this when I watched the film The French Dispatch.
I would have liked to have seen more of the bright colours of Asteroid city and more interactions between the different groups of characters for example I liked watching the friendship between Augie SteenBeck (Jason Schwartzman) and Midge Campbell ( Scarlett Jhohanson) develop throughout and less of the story about the author who I feel had been given a little too much screen time for me to care for I didn’t quite understand why I was supposed to care for him apart from the fact he had created the play.
The very small on screen presence of Margot Robbie and Jeff GoldBloom felt unnecessary. I felt this was as if this was Anderson’s way of showing off by putting highly regarded actors in minor and nameless roles.
The younger actors played each of their roles very well. I was fond of Jack Ryan's performance as Woodrow Augie's son, equally making him one of the main key characters in this film. Also the likeness between both Jason Schwartzman and Jack Ryan was uncanny which made the father and son relationship they were portraying much more believable. I loved the use of Wes Anderson’s family of Actors, some of them playing their roles fresh as if they hadn’t worked together before.
I did like this film but I wouldn’t consider it one of my favourites from Wes Anderson, I would like to see it again to gain a better appreciation for it.
