Next Gen and earlier seasons of Voyager have always been the benchmark for me. It’s Sci-Fi fantasy at its best when the levers are pulled in exactly the right way. The recipe is difficult to get right and Strange New Worlds just doesn’t pull it off. Number One, La’An, Ortegas, M’Benga, Nurse Chapel and Sam Kirk feel off. A casting misstep would be my guess but also some of the writing did these characters no favours. The scene between Spock and Nurse Chapel kissing was the corniest, most ill-conceived writing I’ve seen in the Trek universe. That entire episode was a pile of festering garbage with shocking pirate puns and acting belonging in elementary school plays. That I finished the first season from that point is a surprise. Not recommended.
