" An exhilarating sports drama set in the 1970s"
Sarpatta Parambarai registers the lifestyle of people who lived in North Chennai during the 1970s. Right from the title card the director wants to give an all-new relishing experience of watching a period film set around the boxing sport. A lot of groundwork and research had been carried out to pen down the story for this melodramatic sports tale. Both Pa. Ranjith and Actor Arya were desperate to come back in their career. Sarpatta Parambarai provided the right platform for both director and actor to come back in style.
Director Pa.Ranjith lost his directorial touch after making big star films like Kabali and Kaala but Sarpatta Parambarai helped him to regain his strength. It brings out the true essence of the director who made Attakathi and Madras. The Production design team played an important role in this film to bring out the nostalgic moments. For instance, the slum life of north madras and boxing sports events of the early 70s were recreated for this film. Even the political inferences and important events were unchanged to give a realistic treatment.
The rival clash between Sarpatta Parambarai and Idiyappam Parambarai was well established from the first scene.
Actor Arya lived the character of 'Kabilan'
It is quite evident that a lot of hard work, commitment, and dedication are required for the role of Kabilan. Also, the film demands a lot of physical transformation from the protagonist which Arya provides in style with his solid performance. The emotional shifts and body transformation for the intense action sequences were perfectly portrayed by Actor Arya. Apart from the lead roles, even the supporting characters gave their best performance.
Roles like Daddy, Dancing Rose, Rangan, Vetri, and Mariyamma will stay in our minds for a long time. Antony Vijay plays the role of Daddy and brings a lot of humor with his Anglo-Indian accent. Shabeer plays the role of Dancing Rose and gave a solid performance inside the boxing ring. Pasupathy plays the powerful role of Rangan Vaathiyaar. Kalaiyarasan plays the role of Vetri. All the performances of supporting actors are picture perfect and very real. Even the smallest character in the film displays a top-notch performance. Dushara Vijayan plays the female lead Mariyamma. The love chemistry between Kabilan and Mariyamma is a treat to watch. The first-night dance scene and fighting scene with Kabilan was a surprise package and she will surprise the audience!
The technical team of this film deserves a huge round of applause. Be it editing or art direction or sound engineering or custom design. For instance, even the small detailing like hairstyle, boxing suits, shirt design car number plates, and jewelry portrays the style and design of retro 70s. Santosh Narayanan will always give the best beats for Pa.Ranjith which again happened in this film. The background score for the boxing fight scene is exhilarating and engaging. Murali G is in charge of Cinematography. The top-angle shots of the boxing ring were beautifully filmed towards the end. All the stunt sequences were brilliantly captured and edited well.
Overall, Sarpatta Parambarai is a career-best film for Arya and Pa.Vijay. Get ready to witness the exciting time travel of the 70s. It has all the ingredients to become a blockbuster but unfortunately not able to experience it on the big screen! Nevertheless, Don't miss this gem streaming on Amazon Prime.
