o So to start this off I absolutely have loved everything that I’ve read that Lisa Jewell has written, every time. This was no exception. The writing in this as if it was a script for a Netflix documentary played out in my head exactly as that. The beginning of every chapter is basically stage directions, example: camera pans across a desk etc., and then it breaks into recording from the podcast, and then the story goes on from there like you’re being brought into the story that way. I loved that for everything that it was, I definitely didn’t think that would be an easy way to write this story and these characters, but having the characters tell their own stories was freaking brilliant.
o Josie Fair is turning 45. Her husband is quite a bit older than her, one daughter is out of the house and the other stays holed up in her room, gaming 100% of the time. We never hear from her. However, Josie decides to switch it up and they end up at a fancier restaurant and see another crew come in with a birthday balloon, etc. Josie cannot stop staring, and ends up following the girl that appears to be the center of attention into the bathroom. We find out that this is Alix Summer, a podcaster, and it too, is her birthday.
o After some thinking about her dinner and meeting Alix, Josie decides to look more into her, finds out she is a podcaster, and listens to all of her podcasts. Josie is unhappy with her marriage and where she is at in life compared to Alix. She realizes that Alix’s podcasts are stories of women who lived through trauma and pushed through and made something amazing of themselves. Josie finds Alix and offers her something different. Something oddly different. Throughout the story you will see Alix ignore her intuition MULTIPLE times and I wanted to scream at that.
o Alix agrees to Josie’s idea of a podcast of a woman in a place where she is making the decision to change her life and her situation because Alix is looking for something different to do. So starts “Hi, I’m Your Birthday Twin”
o There are a bunch of strange things that happen and then one night in the middle of the night Josie shows up to Alix’s house after a dinner there that Josie, her husband, Alix and her husband Nathan were supposed to have and Nathan didn’t show up for, bloodied saying that her husband hit her. Alix allows her to stay. She ends up staying for an extended period of time and then the events that cause the Netflix series start to unravel through the telling of the story. I will not summarize those though because that would ruin the entire book.
o Just know that the entire time I was screaming in my brain at Alix to listen to her gut because the gut is never wrong! The twists and turns in this story are absolutely wild, and I still don’t feel like I have the correct answer to my questions even after finishing it. Which is amazing, I may re-read just to see if I can come up with any other theories a second or third time. If you’re looking for a book to keep you guessing the ENTIRE way through (and afterward) you should definitely read this book.
