UPDATE: 26 Jan 2020
With repeated issues with the game and how much a money magnet it can become. After over 2,500 hours of playtime on Star Trek Online, I still can't rate this any higher than one or two stars. The game play is ok for space combat, lackluster for ground combat. And overall, ok if all you ever dream of doing is playing the game on easy mode (normal difficulty) and not paying anything to get better ships and gear upgraded.
If you are like I imagine a lot of people are, you'll eventually want to know how to get better DPS and better performance from your character, bridge officers, away team, teammates, and ship. Then you'll find you will need make lots of purchases be it from the exchange and/or from the c-store (cash shop) to get ships that would be better than other ships and make the game easier for you. Example, if you are a science ship fan, then you'll want a temporal science ship like the Verne which is almost never below $100 on the Mudd's Market nor the exchange (in-game auction house). If you like carriers, you'll want traits like Superior Area Denial and Dominion Coordination starship traits. Before the recent update, easier to get for Klingon aligned characters and Romulans. After the update, everyone has to get the Mirror Engle Strike Wing Escort and the Jem'Hadar Dreadnought Carrier T6 respectively to get those traits. Those aren't cheap.
As for my old review, they did sort of fix the issues with the T6-X upgrades, but in doing so they had caused more bugs to surface and still have some issues related to it where ship traits don't keep if you switch ships. And even having the entire traits area go blank unless you load up a previously saved loadout.
All in all, I play the game still even at 1 star, because I like the Star Trek style ships, but I can't recommend it. Its not true Star Trek at times, with you spending more time hopping from queue to queue to do various tasks like Starbase One, sit in the middle of the map cast a gravity well and just shoot energy weapons and torpedoes at the well. And somehow everything gets destroyed. The game is so trivial at times, that it leads to boredom. But can be fun if you like that sort of playstyle or enjoy the little bit of Star Trek lore it has in it.
