I haven’t finished the book, but will indeed. From my initial two chapters I can see why someone would not like RD’s message. It’s depressing. It predicts the eventual demise of our species. It reflects why democratic government regulations are so important to our survival; it keeps selfish individuals in check or at least that’s the purpose. Having a life science background allows me to evaluate the selfish gene theory and it is consistent with evolution. So far I only disagree with one of RD’s statements and he even contradicts himself in another passage. Selection of survival of the fittest can occur in a single individual lifetime if a genetic mutation has a profound effect on survival and thus reproduction, so evolution can be rapid! As a science writer myself, and knowing how difficult it is to convey these complex concepts to the lay, my opinion is RD is an exceptional writer.
