I have watched two episodes and don't think I will watch more. While realizing this is a fictional dramatization, I don't like the overall theme that the early twentieth century was dominated by ruthless, opportunistic villains. There really are no redeeming characters so far. After two episodes, it seems the moral is, "take whatever you can, by whatever means necessary -- humanity be damned". A quote from Harrison Ford's character essentially says, you can't kill all your enemies because they need to live to warn others of your treachery. This is a dangerous narrative for any younger viewers.
I have never experienced people like these characters in my lifetime and don't find any of the content relatable (and my grandfather was a Sooner who came by wagon train to California as a child). Even if the wish of writers is to highlight the "wrongs" in our history, there has, so far, been no story other than a life of hell to provide balance. A society such as that would not be able to sustain itself.
The abuse of natives is too uncomfortable to watch. While I have no doubt there were such abuses, who, in their right mind, wants to watch physical abuse and sexual sodomy. It is too much. The story line of the WWI shell-shocked nephew as an animal hunter in Africa lacks material to make me care.
I view material to be entertained, with the cast and reviews I really wanted to like 1923. Series don't have to all be happy and light-hearted, but since life is hard enough right now I'll choose not to continue watching something that makes life seem more bleak and tenuous.
