1917 was always going to be a blunt and brutal movie about bravery and sacrifice as WW1 was a grim protracted war, fighting without modern weaponry over baron landscapes. There was no super villain nor Hollywood stylized WMDs to spice up battles, instead trench and fix bayonet combat.I was anticipating a genuinely superior war movie, influenced by media hype, however i came away from the movie feeling let down.A gripping beginning follows two soldiers on a seemingly impossible mission which keeps you engaged for the first act of the movie. The action is sparse but the courage displayed by the young soldiers and audaciousness of the mission never lets up.1917 loosens its grip on you after some drawn out scenes that seem contrived and lack intensity.Maybe its due to there only being focus on a solitary soldier for most part with whom i found taxing at times.I wondered how it was possible to be wringing wet and wounded yet provide a fluffy letter intact? The movie has a dire and sombre feel, which although appropriate for the times never elevates you above it,The unlikely result of the mission becomes apparent too early with a hazy sequence of events which are not particularly probable or entertaining! Beautifully shot ,but lacking any real suspense or excitement.
