Very close to perfection. Just a voice and a piano, and both as good as it gets. The natural melancholy, sparseness, and haunting quality of Evans’ playing with Bennett’s understated and unembellished style is just divine. There are moments of silence pierced by just the right note at just the right time that will shake you from whatever moment you are in. And the songs! Introspective, retrospective, and moving. Just start the album on the first track and listen to it closely til the end with the right drink and the right person. No need to talk. It’s a gift, available to us all if we want to accept it. My favorites are Some Other Time, But Beautiful, and The Days of Wine and Roses.
