This film I understand is not a biography but a retrospective piece through the lens of Munroe's relentless battle with the male gaze, objectification, equal pay, trust and trauma, wavering on her own resilience.
The film has been promised to cause controversy and it does. Star Adrien Brody stated in the Actor’s Side podcast, “There will be some controversy with that one, I’m sure.” The film’s director commented on this, crediting the #MeToo movement. Therefore is the intent to shock us with what Munro would tell us if she were to demonstrate her story to the MeToo movement. That the most iconic female of Hollywoods Golden Age was treated disgracefully and now has a voice through this film? Is it to exploit the living who contributed to her mistreatment. The synopsis isn't clear. And what if she didn't want that story to be told. Another choice that has been revoked. The actress I thought was captivating and the style of film was a fusion of both old cinema and modern. It was uncomfortable at times but I'm assuming it was to give the viewer that reaction on purpose because abuse at any level is shocking. Being able to recognise being abused and adapting to such exploitations and vulnerabilities, shows the darker side of the bubblegum bubbley bombshell title. I don't know, my gut is telling me on one hand she is still being exploited and humiliated long after dead but equally I understand the importance of timing and its time for female actresses to be heard and looked after.
