I just finished reading this book after my friend in Beijing showed it to me. Who has not felt like running away from society and living alone on a deserted island? Not just any island, but a beautiful set of islands in the middle of the Pacific, with virgin white sand beaches and turquoise waters that words can't describe.
Well, while we all dream of it, Tom Neale (the author) decided to actually do it, and he describes his two separate multi-year stints and how he survived and thrived. Although this book doesn't document it, he actually went back for a third stint which lasted ten years and I'm sad to hear that he never wrote about that. I'm sure that ten year stint was even more eventful than what is in this book.
It's an amazing journal to read and shows how peaceful and simple life can be. While we may not be able to move to an isolated island, we can at least find some reprieve from the crazy world in the pages of this book. Great book!
