As an avid fan of the witcher books and games, I was pleasantly surprised on finding out the series adaptation of the same on Netflix. The season 1 of the show was spectacular with the Battle of Sodden Hill still being one of the best skirmishes seen on TV. The casting of the show for the major characters is brilliant with Henry Cavill's portrayal of Geralt totally does his character justice. Anya Chalotra and Freya Allen casting as Yennefer and Ciri respectively is also quite alluring. Joey Batey as Jaskier/Dandelion is just brilliant.
Even though I am well aware of the fact that the show can't exactly go the same way as the books and not that it should, but is it too much to ask for a decent storyline and not just go for brawn over brains. You can't expect to show brutal fights and highly action packed scenes just so as to compensate for an inherently flawed storyline. Introduction of unnecessary characters and killing off certain minor yet crucial characters could still be tolerated if they are just justified and spoiler alert they weren't.
To point out the specific plot inadequacies and problems which I will now and which you shouldn't be reading unless you aren't too bothered by it.
Spoiler Alert
Yennefer of Vengerberg have had this unquenchable thirst for power and supremacy but could never and I repeat for dramatic effect ofc COULD NEVER prioritise it over her loved ones. She can and will do anything to keep Geralt and Ciri from harm's way and if you think her sacrifice as a last resort could revert the viewers ideology...well then you are wrong. To think that she was planning to sacrifice her, the thought itself is irksome. Also Yen isn't that prone to emotions and even if she is, she never exhibits them on the outside except to the people she loves and even then she gives them a hard time . The developement of a mother daughter bond between Yen and Ciri through mutual respect and admiration is one that the book does the best.
To keep the rest short and sweet
Voleth Meir - Why ? Just Why? ( No Point of her existence whatsoever.)
Eskel - Killed off for no damn reason
Kaer Morhen - It was supposed to be a hideout the location of which was forgotten to all except the witchers and not a place that any assassin/ mage can jump off to.
Vesemir - Don't think that Vesemir was ever at all interested in his later years to cause agony to given up kids to turn them into witchers. Though he did keep the table even in the game as Lambert once said.
Going with the book this time "You don't have to kill your feelings, it's enough to kill the hatred within them". So will probably stick around for season 3 to see whether the show still have hopes for recovery.
