I went to see this movie because I enjoy period-piece cinematography and, in this regard, I was duly rewarded. This film is very visual, and in a way that one may describe as "hauntingly beautiful". A medieval castle dating back to the 1200s was a most appropriate prop for key scenes that added much to the substance of this Gothic horror flick. The negative take-aways from this film have to do with the special effects (i.e., far too campy at times) as well as the character of Count Orlok. The latter comes off as cartoonish versus a dangerously dark demon that mysteriously lurks in the shadows of our subconscious. Due to the highly caricatured and revolting nature of Orlok, it then becomes a stretch to imagine him as an erotic predator hell bent on blood-sucking his victims for his own amorous agenda. However, if you are able to overlook some of the flaws, this movie is still worthwhile as above-average entertainment.
