Those words come from a speech by Frederick Douglas who campaigned against slavery and wanted to make clear that those who profess to favour freedom and yet deprecate agitation are people who want crops without ploughing up the ground. Changing the world won't make people like you. Many will see you as a difficult woman.' I would have liked a bit more on the matter of how women themselves contribute to the undermining of their peers. Men have no monopoly on this undermining of the so-called difficult woman, not these days. The difficult voice is up for tearing down by everyone who would like to maintain the status quo. But anyone, regardless of their label, who believes in maintaining the status quo, foregoes growth and progress. Therein lies oppression.
