I was really enthusiastic watching the trailer and Inside Out 2 delivered. Definitely one of the best movies this year. I will say, though, it is not better than the original, but it builds on our “puberty cliffhanger.” I will try to include as few spoilers as possible, but ZERO guarantees.
Starting off with the positives: I loved the animation and music. It was seriously well done and the music was beautiful. I do wish they kept more of the main melody in the first film, I only heard it 2 or 3 times in the sequel.
The theme definitely appealed more so to an older audience. As someone who was very young watching the first film and now being a teen watching the second it was very relatable for me. The climax of this film with the anxiety attack vs the previous film featuring a reuniting between Riley and her parents was a huge contrast and gave us more time to learn about Riley and her teenage friendship-focused life.
Now for some of the negatives: I was disappointed to not hear the voices of Fear and Disgust but I eventually settled into the new voice actors after a few minutes, but there were spots it didn’t fit quite right. Some emotions just overlapped too much and it didn’t make sense. For example, there was a part where Envy was happy and made Riley do an action I’d expect from Joy. They made up some new “clever locations” like the Sar-chasm, but they didn’t really help the film develop in anyway. It felt like wasted screen time on something I found a bit unfunny.
By all means, I will happily watch this movie again along with the first. They are both incredible and I thoroughly enjoyed the sequel.
