The professional critics are wrong. I am so glad that I chose this film on a recent Lufthansa flight. This underrated gem compassionately captures all the horrors of war, for both the victors and the vanquished. The grievous losses suffered by each character are portrayed subtly and accurately - you can genuinely understand every character's behaviors, actions, and motivations, even if you don't agree with them. The performances are stellar, even the young daughter who doesn't have many lines of dialogue but she conveys all the universal emotions, reactions, and choices that any teenage girl would experience, with her face and body language. The love scenes are beautifully filmed, nothing gratuitous here. The whole spectrum of humanity is on display here, you be the judge - but be fair. Make sure to watch the film with subtitles so you do not miss any of the dialogue or translation.
