There's nothing particularly new or innovative about the plot or even the setting in this book but I read it with a smile on my face throughout. Richard Osman has a deft turn of phrase that conjures up a comfortable middle class life in the south of England while also gently reminding us of the poignancy of old age and the tragedy of loving couples separated at the end of their lives by the randomness of ill health. The central mystery is well plotted with just enough clues and the amateur sleuths are engaging, likeable and very recognisable. I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment.
