A great book, the author's first novel. Any middle-school child should enjoy this book which is narrated in the voice of a middle-school girl. I am a male senior citizen, and I found the book to be well-written and fun to read. The author paints good word pictures. For example, I loved the line, "Her face was the color of yesterday's grits." If you have spent time in the southern USA, you can picture that quite well. The best part of this book is the way it will inspire the young reader to strive to be a friend even to people who are not very appealing at first. We all need more of that message. Enjoy!
