(Spoiler warning) This is going to be a very long explanation, but hang in there with me as I explain some things that people seem to glance over.
Strange World was a movie that I wasn’t expecting. But I loved it. I have seen so many negative reviews about the plot, characters, gay addition, boredom of the show, and setting choices. Let me say: y’all are 110% allowed to have your opinions, but this is coming from a teen Christian girl who is growing up in the modern world.
#1: imma just start by saying that this is a visually STUNNING movie. The character designs are so well thought out. Including the different skin tones and being so diverse and comfortable in that was really enjoyable to see. It was a normal, and a welcoming field where it didn’t have to be seen as “different” but was seen as normal. The setting choices for both the strange world and normal world were amazing. So vivid and beautifully designed. Truly gorgeous graphics at work.
#2: So many reviews have talked about a boring plot. Whattt??!? My family was on the edge of their seats laughing and enjoying this movie. True, the movie does take a bit to kick off into the storyline, but in the meantime, you get to connect with the characters and really grasp the setting and relationships. The whole “living on a giant organism” thing was so creative. Making those connections of the inner body parts and organs while the movie went along was so cool and enjoyable. Maybe if younger kids are not able to enjoy this bit of the movie, they can at least understand that they are living on a giant turtle. Who cares if it’s predictable, it was super creative the way that they revealed that part of the plot.
#3: Now for the kicker. Ethan has a crush on a guy. So many people are concerned with the rating of the show. “Maybe it should be PG-13 because of a 16 year old gay child!” MAYBE! However, Ethan has a crush. If this is bothering to a viewer, it’s not the whole point or plot of the movie! It’s just an aspect of the character and can be pushed aside all you want it to be. I am a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I don’t support gay marriages or things like that, but I personally liked this touch of the movie. Disney is trying hard to fit in with the new modern world. This modern world also includes Gay Individuals. You cannot physically escape that. This also makes those part of the LGBTQ+ community feel included and loved using an aspect of the Disney Movie.
So in conclusion: some of y’all are digging wayyyy too deep into this. It’s not a movie that needs critics making connections where the dots don’t connect. It is a funky, fresh, vividly colorful movie that I personally enjoyed for the spunky characters, loving moments, relationship building and stunning visuals. If you do not wish for your children to see this movie, don’t take them to see it. Period. But it was an experience and movie that I do not regret watching and would 100000% watch again:)
