The script turns this into a simple feel good vintage romance movie. What a cop out. There is so much rich material from the book that could have been included, such as the personal sacrifices of many of Rantz’s teammates, along with a little more depth to Joe Pococks crafting of his Skulls, and more, without making the movie too long.
It seems as if George Clooney and company was driven more by profit, than by including greater depth, and thus a timeless historical classic. Now it’s simply relegated to a shallow depth romantic movie.
It would have most likely been greater financial success if it was longer and included many amazing events in the lives of all the crew members, as die hard fans of the book would have flocked to the theater to see it.
Disappointing.
