I’ve had keen interest in the Lincoln assassination for almost 50 years and real history is barely recognizable in this overwrought retelling. More concerned with 21st century parallels and social sensibilities than presenting history, the creators could have learned something from the fidelity of productions like Band of Brothers and the rest of the WW2 trilogy. Key elements that helped reveal those guilty were simply ignored. Lewis Payne’s arrest at the Surratt boarding house was filmed in bright sunshine, when he actually showed up late at night ostensibly to dig a ditch. The bizarre hour he came by to perform this task is what raised suspicion. Why not be faithful to that? There are many more examples. This series was a major disappointment.
