Major step back from the previous title, Modern Warfare. Don’t waste your money on it unless Treyarch decides to make a lot of fixes. My take always below:
Graphics: I didn’t think a franchise as big as COD would have such cheap graphics. everything is extremely grainy and drowned out. Hard to see enemies at a distance, cover on the roads such as cars look blocky and bad. Gun animations are very basic and uninspired.
Maps: Decent. Nothing in map design, good or bad, really stands out to me. Pretty average.
Sound effects: Honestly the worst I have heard in a video game in the last 6 years. Gunshots are drowned out, all guns sound the same, nothing sound wise in the game that make for intense moments. Sound effects hugely supports immersive environments in games. This game is SEVERELY lacking immersive sound.
Movement: I don’t know where to begin, the Coldwar engine is simply awful. Movement is slow and clunky. You feel like you’re moving in wet concrete when running while enemies you’re aiming at zip past you. Meanwhile when you start sliding, it’s like you hit some black ice and fly 15 feet. You kind of just float over walls, through windows, over objects. Nothing about the movement makes you feel like you’re in a heat of the moment battle. It’s very, very wonky. The overall feel very cheap and arcade-like.
Lack of Immersion is Coldwar’s biggest downfall based on my sentiments above. MW is and will continue to be so good because it’s immersive as hell- bullets zip past you, explosions and gunfire popping off in the distance which actually sounds real, each firearm has a unique sound, movement over objects/windows are so detailed and realistic, it feels like you’re moving in game.
It’s so clear that this game was very rushed. Unless treyarch can get some major updates going, MW will remain the most current COD for a huge portion of the franchises player base.
