A really horrible and depressing movie. I wish I didn't watch it. It left me feeling depressed. Its a pity that such great talent was wasted on this emotional poison. It's more a piece of depressing art than a movie. I've given it two stars because the acting was brilliant, casting excellent, production and direction great, and an out of the box of concept. That would have been better off shelving. Just because its different doesn't make it good or worth doing. Why they even bothered to make it is beyond me. Maybe they were sitting around trying to think up a concept for a movie and someone said " hey lets make a movie that brings out the worst in people and leaves viewers depressed" If you want to have a miserable day then watch this. Especially if your a 50+ university professor.

Initially it was dull and i wasn’t into it at all. I felt the choice of lead was so wrong. In the middle of this dullness was this over the top “Jim Carey” kind of character in an unattractive woman. However as the film unfolded it turned into a surprisingly satisfying joy ride full of unpredictable grotesque violence underneath this comedic predictability. Not unlike a Quentin Tarantino film. Like a crescendo in music by the end of the film, the lead had transformed from a weak unattractive character into a strong desirable good looking hard nosed character. The film ended up grabbing me by the throat and catapulting me through to the end while satisfying all my desires and delivering a great romp of a movie.

Violent, but a work of art none the less.

i just couldn't resist piling more calumny on this movie. Because it deserves it. I had read the reviews but fool me still attempted to watch it. I had to fast forward through most of it. It wasn't until the last 5 minutes that I stopped flicking through it. The 1 star is for the last 5 minutes which I enjoyed, although they even managed to spoil that at the very end of the film. It's on netflix fortunately so I didn't have to feel bad about paying. I've had a better time at the dentist having my teeth drilled! No matter how tempting it may be to watch it, dont! Even if it's for free. You'll regret it. I seriously think this is possibly the worst movie in the history of movie making. The only good thing about it is that a lot of people earned a living during the making of it. Although the military could probably use it as an interrogation tool instead of waterboarding.

I’m ten minutes in and I can’t stand it anymore. it’s not getting any better. It’s just horrible. The director seems to be unsure of what they are doing. The scenes are just weird, almost clumsy. The movement and speaking of the actors is stilted. The colour composition and patina is great, atmosphere is a little claustrophobic but believable but the acting is just like watching a high school play of amateurs. Some of the acting is ok but they are brought down by the other poor performances. I keep expecting it to get better but it’s just getting worse. Just can’t bring myself to watch any more. There is no tension no plot nothing to carry you through. It’s just like a mindless array of one story beat after another with no obvious relation to one another. As far as s historical depiction it looks credible but there are fundamental elements that make a great story that are just missing. It’s like they tried to reinvent the wheel of a story with a blindfold on. I can usually tell if a film is going to be any good in the first 10 min. The opening is important. If they can’t get it right there, it usually doesn’t get any better. It’s very stiff and awkward. If I ever decide to put myself through the agony of forcing myself to watch the rest of it I may come back and add or change my rating depending if it gets better or worse. TBH you would have to pay me to watch it right through at this point in time. UPDATE I was able to drag myself to watch it starting from about 15 minutes in and it fortunately improved. It went from a high school play and leapt into a pretty good film. The tension IMO should have been at the beginning but they didn't use it until the long winded introduction to the 'scene setting' was over. If your sitting in a theater you will probably put up with it and not walk out and then you will get to the the plot beginning. But watching it on apple TV (even on my huge projection screen) It's easier to just turn it off than walk out, which is what I initially did. Any way as I said the film improved immensely and the acting improved immensely, and it all started to work. Its very gritty and with an authentic feel. I originally gave it 2 stars due to the beginning being hard to tolerate. But having seen the whole movie it was worth getting back to it. But I would probably never watch it again and if I did I would skip the first part. I would like to give it 5 stars for the raw primeval intensity but just can't get past the amateurish beginning so I've updated it my rating to 3 stars

I’m 11 minutes in and it’s where it should have started! The first part should have ended up on the cutting room floor. Such a cluttered unnecessarily complex and disjointed intro. In this day and age it’s unforgivable unless it’s a high school project, not a feature film. So far over designed over written hammy disconnected acting. Like they are all in different rooms talking to themselves. Overly indulgent irrelevant camera work. So far really can’t tell what the plot is. If the writer wanted to communicate what the movie was about it didn’t happen. No tension, just one long irrelevant conglomeration of words pictures and sound. Ten minutes talking about buying a helicopter lol. Maybe it’s a comedy ha ha. It’s not getting any better. Inconsistent colour toning and more overdone camera work and art direction, to many jittery distracting close ups and dialogue. Intrusive music! Horrible movie. Like they tried to do a Tarantino style movie but failed miserably. 24 minutes in still talking about buying a helicopter, it’s getting worse! Can’t stand it any more, I’m turning it off. Argggh!

A masterpiece of animation. I’m not really into animation but this transcends the usual. Like a Hayao Miyazaki anime on steroids! Beautiful colours, beautiful designs, characters. Mind boggling visuals. Script is great and pace is unusual but it works and it allows you to immerse yourself into it.

Brilliant masterpiece. Struggling to find anything that I don’t like about this film. The pace is spot on, the casting is perfect, the production design and costume designs are brilliant. The look was tongue in cheek elegant and classy, slightly steam punk neo Victorian feel to it, with the right amount of grunge. The script was so good I didn’t notice any anomaly’s and at times gripping. There was just the right amount of tension. It moved very fast creating interesting subjectivity which at first was surprising but the continuity worked as I was able to fill in between the dots easily. I’ve not seen any previous animations or films, so I had no expectations. So for me it was a joy to watch.
