Between this book, The Secret Chord, and The Year of Wonders, they are two of my favorite five books I’ve so far read in this lifetime. All of Brooks’ novels are beautifully written and tell stories of how people navigated strange, sometimes horrific, situations. Never before had I thought of anyone biblical as having ever been a true person. Every text on religious folks I have read previously, blows each so-called prophet into such an unrealistic holier-than-thou creature that no one can relate to, let alone wish to emulate. For once, I actually found a biblical character who I felt was worthy of reverence—maybe especially because David was portrayed as being so spectacularly human! Please, PLEASE, Mme. Brooks, continue to write these unusual historical novels! I have so enjoyed them!
