I do NOT watch many new comedy shows. Woke comedy and all the political inserts that people are using nowadays has ruined a lot of new productions.
But I decided to give this a chance, have as a joke with my girlfriend, half to try something new. Admittedly, the show isn’t my kind of thing. The main idea (what’s in the name) is something I don’t think I can enjoy.
But it is very funny. I was expecting a lot of political tropes - tropes of white dads and children, black men and women, LGBT stuff - but there wasn’t actually very much. All the minor political commentary lines I noticed were things you’d expect college students to say, so it felt more like a true-to-life college experience than a political message. They didn’t sacrifice humor for politics.
Most importantly the characters are likeable. The ones you don’t like are disliked because of who they are written as, not how they are written. Also, the actors (especially the one who plays Leighton) really make you think these are real college students.
There is subtle cultural commentary written in. I can think of one of the first scenes where an unattractive man proclaims he’s coming out the closet for the first time, and gets no response. Then a handsome guy says he’s been out for his whole life, and gets consoling “oohs” and “ahhs” from all the girls in the room. You never see people address that kind of thing but it totally ought to be if your goal is political/cultural commentary. Most importantly is was a really funny scene.
The show is good and while you may want some scenes to end, it’s mainly to get to the next scene, not to get to the next show on your list.
It’s refreshing to see the show focus so much on diversity among the characters (you can tell that’s what they were doing in the pilot) and end up with an engaging show that feels natural to watch.
