This DLC is absolutely amazing. The only bad reviews I’ve seen are from people who were expecting an entirely different game from AC Valhalla. It’s important to keep in mind that an expansion is just that- an expansion. It builds off of the core foundation of the content being expanded.
The new world is nothing short of jaw dropping. From glimmering golden peaks that blaze upward from the earth and punch the starry sky, falls that seem to plummet from the heavens themselves, crushing the lush landscape below, a vast range of colors and sounds tickle your senses, akin to James Camerons Pandora. The campaign keeps your attention like a gollum to a golden ring, constantly stoking your interest and catapulting you to its climax faster than a bolt of lightning. Which brings me to my biggest complaint.
I finished the campaign, side quests, a few mysteries, a few artifacts, hit every sync point, and indulged in a few raids, in just under 17 hours. I didn’t skip any dialogue, and I didn’t “speedrun” through. I basked in the experience I had been eagerly waiting for. The rumors I had heard were 35 hours of campaign, just under Valhallas massive 40/50 hour campaign. It may be my own fault for setting the expectation that DoR might hold a candle to Valhallas campaign. When it ended not only was I surpised/sad, but I felt a little deceived.
Aside from the length of the campaign, there are a few other smaller issues. Without giving spoilers, there are some new abilities that conflict with other abilities- sprinting in particular. If you’re trying to evade an enemy, the last thing you want is to do is instead come to a dead stop. There are also other small issues within the abilities, (and again, without giving away too much) which you will find out quickly when it comes time to retrieve a certain dwarves tools.
With that being said- my opinion does not waver. These are minuscule issues in a massive game. There’s a chance you may not even notice most of them. Minus the untimely ending… It is worth every bit of $40. I would rate 4 stars as an honest rating, but I’m going to give it 5 to try and offset the bitter Billy’s who were expecting something from AC Valhalla that it clearly isn’t. Thank you Ubisoft for another beautiful experience. I’ll be watching closely for a response to that ending!!!!
