I enjoyed the book up untill Fletchers arrival at Vocans. The story was well written and, character descriptions and scene building was extremely colorful and intricate, however when Fletcher arrived at Vocans, the storyline sped up too much. Some characters like Rook was written like a petulant child throwing nobility tantrums and looking for reason to rat ppl out and this coming from a teacher infront of students. The Provost was written like a disgruntled old man who punishes first and apolgises after the fact. If u are a leader of an axademy, that sort of behaviour seems a bit childish and considering they have to teach ppl to go to a war and fight, this part is lacking abit. Some slang also felt too modern for the time period the story was set in and certain descriptions was overdone with adjectives. Also, the procession of classes was too fast; here u have noviciates that know little to nothing of summoning and yet they are taught to pull on mana and create a wyrdligt in lesson one, infuse their demon in lesson 2 and then enter the ether in lesson 3??? That seems extraordinarily fast and to top it all off, the nobles are allowed to leave class because tey have been taught all of this from home....why are they there then at a first year level? I understand the timetable have been moved up due to shortages of battle mages but then a sort of expertise or proficiency test could have been put in place to have nobles come in at a time that suited their level of experience instead of being used to disrupt the classes with their classism.
