The animation was incredibly beautiful, that alone would garner five stars from me, every scene was designed perfectly, but visuals sadly do not make up the entirety of a movie.
I've waited three years for this movie, so I may be a little biased, but I'll try and remove that as much as possible.
I, for one, did not like the musical aspect of it. I felt it didn't meet Ladybug and Cat Noirs character, the song took up most of the movie when their personalities are mostly built on their skill sets. And even if the musical aspect did make up the characters, the songs weren't as deeply considered --something that would bring more flavor to the musical scenes. The melodies for all the songs were almost the same, they all had changes in rhythm which sort of messed up the flow of certain songs and the lyrics felt predictable. It didn't add more to the scene, as the excitement of them normally battling out akuma's would (Even if it's the normal stereotype, its something looked forward to)
I also felt the storyline progressed too fast before the characters were allowed to let their feelings sink in--or even grow so we could understand their changes in emotions, sort of making certain scenes that could've been powerful, cringe. Like the Marinette scene where she was scared to become ladybug, but then all of a sudden, after saying no more, she was like "I'm not gonna be scared anymore". Scenes were missing before that, I felt, that could've helped build that scene better (This is what I mean about the musical taking up parts of the movie and it felt unnecessary, whereas other scenes could fill that role)
Yes, I know Marinette and Adrien have that kind of cringe relationship (I genuinely love it) but with this movie it should've been built in more details so we could go through the process of their feelings, it felt rushed and more cringe because of that rushed feeling.
I loved the inner dialogue during the part between Ladybug and Cat Noir about their feelings before she knew, even though there was something there, she couldn't explore that something. That was fresh and new.
But the ending where they got together also felt rushed and out of place, again there was no scene where Marinette was shocked that was Adrian (that would've been a big thing) or it didn't explore her emotions during that time Adrian felt heartbroken, just that small scene of him on the bed. After that whole scene of figuring out who he was...it just cut to the part where she revealed herself to him, and even that felt like too much (out of place). Even the scene of Gabriel going evil and destroying the city felt rushed.
To be honest I really love this series with all my heart, the movie just disappointed me for a three year wait. I wished it was more detailed, better explained (on their emotions and character relationships instead of feeling it in with a musical part). I genuinely love musicals but I felt it just didn't fit well here, this movie has so much potential but its missing parts in the film that'll make it beautiful. Throwing in a song or two isn't bad, Marinette's voice was beautiful, but the melodies were just too simple.
I really hope this is not where Ladybug and Cat Noir movie making ends, I want a redemption movie so bad no matter the wait. So let's cross our fingers and hope for progress!
