I generally love Eli Roth films but this one was super disappointing. I’m left wondering what point he was trying to make with this film. It’s essentially a rape film with no perceivable motive that culminates in the total destruction of the victim’s life. They try to present the story as women taking revenge on men who cheat but the main character Evan, was an upstanding man that didn’t fit with that narrative. He said no to their sexual advances multiple times so they raped him and then destroyed his life for no apparent reason other than a flawed perception about men in general. From a viewer’s perspective, it would have been so much more satisfying to see the girls target a man who actually was a low life cheater or for Evan to get some kind of revenge on these women at the end for ruining his life when he had only tried to help them. Neither happened. These women were so awful, I couldn’t find a speck of compassion for them even when the story hinted at their traumatic childhoods. Maybe the intent was to just make us all feel disturbed that diabolical women with no conscience exist among us? I did really appreciate Keanu’s acting in this film though which made me feel even more awful and heartbroken for the main character Evan’s story. A super downer of a film. I’d like to see an alternative ending where he really fucks those crazy bitches up.
