This Movie was raw and beautiful in the way it showed the Joker. They could not have chosen a better Actor for the leading role. From the lighting, soundtrack and symbology, this Film ticks every box. This portrait of the Joker is one of Vulnerability and brings to light Arthur's child like nature.
Every single Actor and Actress in the Film played their part exceptionally. The Film brings attention to the impact of childhood Trauma and does so in a way which provokes an emotional response. The script of The Joker was that of Art and could not be critiqued. With regards to Violence in this film, i don't see how it promotes Violence anymore than going to see a Horror or even The Dark Knight. The difference between the violence in this film to the Dark Knight is that it is more up close and slower in comparison to the fast detached killings in the Dark Knight.
The way the Movie portrays Mental Illness and Social Constructs is very powerful. The movie brings awareness to isolation which surrounds Mental Illness. The Director enables the viewer to experience symptoms of Arthurs mental illness by not differentiating Arthurs Delusions with reality in the beginning of the Film. In doing this, the Director allows the viewer to experience how someone with delusions may feel.
Joaquin Phoenix became the Joker in this film, he did not simply act or play. Joaquin perfected what it is to fully embody someone to the Soul, in his Role as the Joker. Joaquin managed to truly express how the Joker saw himself, not as a Villain but rather as his own Hero.
The movie touches on themes of identity issues, Family issues, and even elements of the Butterfly Effect. The movie sparks questions of what is the truth, what is a joke and leaves a lot to ambiguity.
The way the Joker laughs becomes harrowing throughout the film and the very end will leave you wishing it wasn't over. Even if you don't normally follow the DC movies i highly recommend this Film. While there are connections to the comic, this depiction of the Joker has left space for The Joker to be a series of it's own entirely. Thought provoking and astounding. 10 Stars.
