I've never quite understood the Zendaya fan train people have hopped aboard. At some point, I think if we see enough of someone there's this unspoken social consensus that the person must be visible for a reason and deserves to be seen more and more. Merit-based performances seem to take a backseat to casting and it's partly why I've been waiting to see something different that didn't look the same from her every role: moody, smarter than everyone else, and desired by everyone. It's just rinse and repeat and she somehow becomes "bigger" with every new film and I've never understood why other than she keeps getting roles. However, I can say that this role (out of everything I've seen from her) works. She's perfectly landed into a character that manifests this image into something that's just plain complicated and you want to see what decisions she makes. So, I guess...I liked her performance, finally? Anyways my issue with the film isn't with her at all. Really, the music and editing were abysmal. Both timing and consideration for an audience were completely overlooked and I was left asking myself the same questions over and over, "Why is there weird music playing? Why is the weird music still playing? Does anybody really understood when and when not to use slow-motion?" All in all, it's rough, guys. I was taken out of the movie repeatedly and then drawn back in with my now complicated relationship with Zendaya, apparently.
