You may have sensed a disturbance in The Force. You may have heard that 'The Rise of Skywalker' is mediocre or worse. Here's the reality...
Most critics are leftist elitists. They don't believe in good and evil or right and wrong (though they don't apply that to their politics, in which anybody who disagrees with them is evil and a fascist). And while they often say they believe in egalitarianism and socialism, they often delight in mocking those they feel are their lessers. So they delighted in The Last Jedi's making Luke Skywalker, beloved by fans (their lessers), a hermit who denigrates the Jedi and The Force (a stand-in for religion, which is another realm of the inferior, except Islam and 'Indigenous Ways of Knowing', which are to be venerated and which will get you banned from twitter for criticizing, such as when someone points out the Indigenous Way of Knowing often entailed human sacrifice and failed to produce written language or the wheel). And they loved TLJ's adherence to the egalitarianism they preach but rarely practice in making The Force something everybody can have. Because 'Last Jedi' did the things they love, they ignored the long, pointless, boring detour to the casino planet, and the ridiculous things like Kylo Ren shirtless in high-waisted pants, the voguing Imperial Guards, and Leia in space. Audience members cackled at Leia in space! How could the director have ever thought that was anything but absurd? My guess is he knew it was absurd, and as an elitist liked the idea of 'subverting the audience'. You won't find any put downs of the audience in 'The Rise of Skywalker'. It's fun, it's fast-paced, it's full of emotion and drama and proper respect for the saga and its underpinnings. It's an excellent ending to the saga. By contrast, 'The Last Jedi' will be treated by fans the way that 'The Phantom Menace' is - many just pretend it never happened, because it was boring and it contained elements that arbitrarily changed The Force that were never followed through on because they made no sense.
