Man of Steel is my favorite DCEU movie so far because of one thing that no other superhero movie does. Which is that it takes the “Super” out of Superman and tells the story of just the “Man” that becomes Superman. It tells the story of Clark Kent and how he sees the world and then how the world sees him.
Zack Snyder’s vision for Man of Steel was to make the audience feel as if there was never a Superman movie before this. It’s a very very unique vision to say the least because the character is universally recognized even by the non-comic book readers. And he pulls it off phenomenally.
This film does not glorify a man with super human powers who can fly and saves people. This film shows the sacrifices that Clark has to make to keep his existence a secret and then he has to kill the only biological family he knows to save the people who will never accept him as their own, a human.
It’s a story about a son who saw his father sacrifice himself to protect his son’s secret that he is an alien. It’s a story about a person who is conflicted, confused and carries the burden of the death of his father. A person who wants to do nothing but good, a person who does not do something just for the heck of it but does it because it’s the right thing to do.
Henry Cavill gives an amazing performance and I am not ashamed to say that he is the best Superman to have ever been on screen. At least for me. He shows the struggle, innocence so phenomenally and his excitement when he first tests his powers and learns how to fly is like you as a kid imagining it. Its so so cool! Michael Shannon also puts forth and amazing and menacing performance, he makes you feel the power that he poses
The score by Hans Zimmer is just spectacular and never has superhero movie felt so amazingly personal. May it be the destruction of Krypton or Clark dawning the cape for the first time, Hans Zimmer makes you feel every inch of excitement, trauma, loss and just makes you feel like you are the one flying.
The cinematography of this film is out of the world! Long wide shots that make the experience breathtaking and makes you feel like this is a real world. Especially the scenes on Krypton feel like a mixture between Star Wars and John Carter with Asgard.
