Erm. The subtext seems to have been the first casualty of the insomnia epidemic. The way some of the dialogue is clunked through, the cast should’ve just looked into the camera and explained the story. If the exposition can’t be (at least partly) delivered via subtext, it probably doesn’t need to be scripted.
The biggest problem is the pacing. [This “event” happens and, in bed that evening, people can’t sleep. Then BLAM! The next DAY, the entire human race is doomed! After ONE NIGHT!?
The very same morning this girl becomes the last incarnation of the Buddha somehow because she said she slept… and held hands with Barry Pepper I guess.
I hate to say such a sad thing, but the most realistic part of the movie is the cop who shoots unarmed individuals in the head for no apparent reason. No one tried to disarm the dangerous cop or maybe run away... The most dramatic reaction to such violence is little stronger than a “Hey… That wasn’t nice at all. In fact, we think it was downright rude, mkay?”
I did like the premise at first. Too bad they trusted Siri to write it for them.
