One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The manga is even better. It shows you how complex humans really are, and makes you question who you would really be in other circumstances.
I really enjoy the dystopian setting, the world building was fantastic in this show. It involves several ethical dilemmas, and makes you bounce in between hating and loving certain characters. You’ll cry, you’ll laugh, you’ll jump in fear.
My only issues with this show are how bad the second season is (it’s basically an extreme summarization of 16 books of manga crammed into a single season) and the racist depiction of Sister Krone. Although it’s not uncommon for animes to be this way, I still feel like they could have done better. Still, she is much better than the manga version and she is an actual complex character rather than a shallow one.
Now I’m going to give you a little help on deciding if your kid should watch it. It is very scary at some points so you may not want your child to be seeing this show.
Summary (without spoilers): This show follows three eleven year olds in an orphanage who find out the horrifying truth as to why they are there.
18 and older: For sure appropriate, although some squeamish adults may not appreciate it.
14 and older (high school age): Generally appropriate unless you are less mature and cannot handle intense themes and violence, especially involving children.
11 and older (middle school age): I know middle schoolers who watch it, but they are mature and can handle it. You have to be really mature and thick-skinned to be able to handle it as a middle schooler. Also, the younger kids who I know that watch it tend to appreciate less than the older ones.
10 and younger: Definitely not appropriate for these ages!!!
Basically the TV-14 rating is pretty accurate.
MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE PLOT BELOW!! (no spoilers about specific character deaths)
DON’T SCROLL ANY FURTHER IF YOU DONT WANT THIS SHOW SPOILED!

Summary (with spoilers): This show follows eleven year olds Emma, Norman, and Ray as they try to escape their orphanage once they discover they are being raised to be eaten by demons.
Violence/Gore:
-At the end of the first episode, a character is killed and you watch Emma and Norman find their body. The character was six years old. This is a jump scare.
-An adult character is seen dead. Not as much scary, more sad.
-A main character is believed to be dead, you never see a body though.
-The main premise of the plot is about demons raising children to eat, so obviously there’s that.
-An adult purposefully breaks a child’s leg.
-General suspense and terror throughout the whole show.
SUICIDE MENTION ON NEXT BULLET POINT
-A character (twelve years old) attempts suicide (by trying to light themselves on fire as a distraction) but does not follow through. The way the show plays out makes you think they succeeded for about thirty seconds, until it is shown they are alive.
Adult content:
-None
Language:
-A few curse words are used, but they are of the minor sort and used sparingly.
Drugs/Alcohol:
-None
Overall, this is a really fantastic show. It’s so complex and well written. But, I seriously recommend not watching season two and starting at volume 5 of the manga. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my review and please watch this show!! It will change your life, I promise ;)
(P.S.- The violence and such in the manga (and anime) in volume 5 (season two) and onward was not covered in this review. There is worse violence in the later manga/anime.)
