Probably the best Toy Story movie since the first one. Not as sentimental as 3 but more smartly written and funnier. The more serious themes were handled very well, with Woody's driving sense of loyalty and certainty of purpose being questioned.
It's an emotionally mature movie, most of the time, and not to the point that it would bore the kids. The movie is very funny, with fewer comedic misses than most big releases have, and more big laughs than your average kids movie.
The film didnt make me cry, but it did leave me feeling thoughtful. And with my low expectations going in THAT was a very pleasant surprise.
The new characters were largely delightful. The villain is an interesting multifaceted character, Forky was shockingly likeable. Bo Peep (who was essentially someone new) came across as capable and memorable without seeming like a token "girl power" character. The little cop toy (don't remember her name, unfortunately) was a particular highlight.
As for negatives: some dialogue wasnt very good. A lot of our old friends are essentially missing. Rex, Hamm, Mr. and Mrs. Potatohead and to a lesser degree Jessie have next to nothing to do or even say in this movie. Buzz Lightyear was a little more stupid this time around, which was sort of inconsistent.
Overall it was a beautiful, thoughtful and entertaining movie. Especially as a fourth entry in such a long running series.
