Sutherland's treatment of the machinations of the East India Company, the rise of Clive of India and the intrigue surrounding the story of the Black Hole of Calcutta is masterful.
His use of 18th conversational idiom and care in filling in the patina of the military engagements gives the story an immediacy. As an Historian who loves historical fiction of most eras, I commend this work heartily.
